Company Information

Safeway Construction has been extremely successful in achieving racial and economic diversity in employment and subcontracting with local neighborhood projects.  Of the past five construction projects that Safeway has completed throughout Chicago’s neighborhoods, we have exceeded the City of Chicago’s requirement of 24% MBE and 4% WBE. Our projects generally double the city’s requirements and have averaged between 40%-50% MBE and 5% WBE.

Our success in achieving racial and economic diversity is due in part to our unique approach to embracing the neighborhood on construction projects.  We incorporate a mentor-protégé component whereby neighborhood entrepreneurs and businesses who work in the construction industry are brought into the project.  These individuals have the experience and know-how to perform the work of their trade but often lack the administrative know-how to achieve certification as required by the city.  Our experience in successfully working with minority communities on various construction projects speaks to our ability to be sensitive to the economic hardship facing the community and positively impact families by providing employment opportunities.

Safeway Construction has a sincere interest in the well-being of the community and has developed creative strategies to help local entrepreneurs and businesses achieve economic success and advance to the next level.  One strategy to reach this goal is to incorporate a set-aside component for the subcontractors that are hired on the project.  This set-aside component contains smaller contract packages that will be available to smaller neighborhood contractors which will allow them to participate in the project.  These will include areas such as miscellaneous carpentry, painting, landscaping, and tile work/tile setting.  The subcontractors are strongly encouraged to mentor the neighborhood contractors and share information on business operations, completing required paperwork, etc.  This will help to provide the neighborhood contractors with the tools they need to advance to the next level and competitively operate in the marketplace.  Thus, our goal is to help achieve economic stability for the community beyond the duration of the project.
